The History
The story of Poplar Grove is the story of the new Carolina Colony. Charles Town moved to Oyster Point only 15 years before the first grant for the land that became Poplar Grove was made to Ralph Emms. Over the next 200 years, the Elliot, Rowand and Lowndes families operated plantations that would generate great fortunes. These fortunes were grown with the knowledge and labor of African American slaves who carved rice fields out of the primeval cypress swamps of the Lowcountry. Also called Lowndes Plantation, Poplar Grove grew rice on a moderate scale. Thomas Lowndes produced 38,500 pounds of rice in 1850, in addition to cotton, corn, beans and sweet potatoes. Most plantations grew the provisions they needed for the family and slaves in addition to their cash crop.
